First pics with the new camera

Image
I played with my new camera this weekend for the first time. I am loving my new toy! These pictures are just on auto mode with no editing whatsoever. I have only scratched the surface on learning to use this camera and I have a long way to go. But just having the lens to focus in from far away makes such a big difference. I can get expressions and looks out of these two that I was missing when I had to get 2 inches in front of them to take a picture. Now they might not know I'm watching...

Inspired

Image
I'm always inspired by this one. This week went by fast. I have lots of catching up to do both at home and work this weekend. But I enjoyed the trip, both the conference and seeing my friends. My talk went well and in spite of the early start time on Tuesday morning, the room was full. I met up with some colleagues I hadn't seen in years and had fun catching up. Coming to these meetings makes me realize just how many connections I've made over the years and how important they have been to my career success. It is a wonderful reminder of the positive side of this profession and just what I needed. This week I was inspired on two separate occasions. I listened to a lecture in San Diego by a woman from Harvard. Her data was exciting and extensive and she was given an award by our research society -  only the second time a woman has won this annual award. There are very few women at the top of my field and the fact that she made it to full professor at Harvard i...

Failed Christmas card pics 2011

Image
I would be remiss if I didn't include my valiant attempts at getting a Christmas card picture on this blog. I started early this year, knowing two kids would be more challenging than one. I am happy with the picture we used for the cards (none of these) but a few of these are cute, funny and perfectly imperfect.

A tale of two phones

Image
You may have heard the tragic news already. My iphone 3G came to an untimely death. It was so sudden and unexpected. Having heard so much talk lately about the new iphone 4S coming out (yet another new model to compete with and be compared to unfavorably) my forlorn 3G just couldn’t take it anymore. In a fit of self-loathing and pity, he threw himself off the bathroom cabinet onto the cold, unforgiving tile floor below. Poor 3G, his surface cracked and ugly, he continued to tick in his slow and frustrating way, but his days were numbered. It was time for him to go. I put in a request for the new and improved phone of the hour to take his place. Ah, the mighty 4S. You are so much faster, sleeker, lovelier than I ever knew possible. Most of my excitement for this new phone is geared towards the camera, the best ever put on a mobile device. In spite of 3G’s shortcomings, I still managed to take over a thousand pictures on that phone. The camera on the 4S is super fast, can flip t...

Switching it up

Image
I've been having a hard time keeping up with current pictures on the blog since baby #2 and I don't see this getting any better. So I'm trying a new approach. I'm posting iphone pics of random daily events  here . You can also find the link in the My Tumblr page at the top of this blog. I will continue to make longer posts here but add pictures more often on Tumblr. Posting from my phone on Tumblr is super easy and makes it something I can do on the fly or with a kid (or two) hanging on my arm. So check it out. We're also looking to add more content. There is a new section titled From Ryan's Kitchen where we will post recipes and meal ideas. Ryan is such a great cook and we eat like kings pretty much every night. Thought we would share some of his recipes and see if it inspires someone else to cook healthy food at home. So if there is anyone out there following along here (Hi Mike & Sharon and Julie!) let us know what you like and give us some fe...
