The Big Bed

We really feared the transition from crib to big bed. Charlie has slept through the night for a long time now, comfortable in his crib and without ever trying to climb out (which we're pretty sure he could easily). I had images of sleepless nights, battles over getting out of the bed and Charlie wailing behind a closed door. But we knew we had to make the change before the baby arrived so this past weekend we just went for it. What a surprise!

Charlie slept in his bed all night long from the first night and didn't show any signs of fear or resistance to the change. Even his afternoon nap went smoothly and he didn't try to get out of bed once. Part of this has to do with the fact that he naps on a cot at school and they aren't allowed to get up, we gave him the same rules at home. We've also been talking up his new big bed for weeks now and he's been playing in this room before making the full time transition out of his old room. It seems Charlie was just ready for the move and pleasantly surprised us. I'm sure he'll test us and get out of bed at some point, but I couldn't be happier with the start of the process. Way to go Charlie! He looks so tiny on this big bed and sleeps curled up against the wall most of the time, at one end of the bed or the other. I can't believe he is out of a crib for good. Doesn't seem possible.

  1. Isn't it crazy how tiny they look in the big bed? When Ally slept in hers for the first time, my stomach did multiple turns, knowing she was getting so big at much too fast a rate for my comfort. Charlie is going to love being a big brother--just as perfect as he has been since day one!
