One more step: summer goals & games

**You can improve your health one step at a time. Start here, start now.**

Happy Monday! I am happy to report that my exercise for the past week went much better than last week. And I think I actually have the hot weather to thank. Knowing there is no way I would want to run in these afternoon temperatures, I got up early and exercised in the AM every day last week. I was dragging by the end of the week, but it was a sure fire plan to get in the miles. I was out the door for a run at 6am, home by 6:45. I have the kids to thank as well, as they slept in long enough for me to get in my workout (although I had to sneak out from under Izzy every morning as she has been in our bed every night since we returned from Spain. Going to have to do something about that soon).

My weekly total: 170 minutes of exercise, 18.5 miles running and 3 toning workouts. My every day activity was probably very low given the heat - no trips to the park, no bike rides, no walks to the Farmer's Market. Summer is here to stay and I'm going to just have to face it and brave the heat.

I'm still looking for a summer fitness goal. I know I'll run some races in the fall, but I don't have any current training goals and I'm looking for suggestions. Train for a 5K? A race a month? Do you have summer fitness goals? I'd love to hear how others fit in their exercise in the summer and if you adjust your goals or make new ones to accomodate the heat.

Here's a round up of some health and fitness articles to inform and inspire:
  • Turns out kids still need a real bat and ball to play and be healthy. Hooray for that!
  • I've been hearing a lot about vegan runners lately. What do you think?
  • Here is a company that walks the walk when it comes to fitness.
  • We stumbled upon one of these in Spain. Would this get you moving?
  • These runners were quite a sight at brunch on Saturday. Who wants to join me next year?

The Tour has begun! If you need some inspiration check out this grueling three week, 2,173 mile race. I'd love to have one of these in our new house.

We caught some Olympic trial action this past weekend (did you see that these two will duel it out today?). Can't wait for the games to begin and for rowing to take the spotlight! Do you know rowing?

And a big Congrats to Spain for winning the 2012 European Championship. We were in Barcelona when the first game of this tournament began so we felt like we had a little part in Spain's magical run.

Have a great and active week!

  1. The color run was too fun - i highly recommend it - quite a few people brought their kids and walked or baby jogged it too - it was not timed and only 5K
